Illnesses and Diseases that Could Entitle You to Disability Benefits

When you become unable to work because of a disabling injury or disease, you face a threat on many levels. Not only is your financial well-being potentially compromised, but you may not be able to afford medical treatment or health insurance. However, Social Security programs offer income benefits and access to necessary medical care for qualified applicants.

There are a variety of injuries and diseases that could result in entitlement to disability benefits. Some of these health problems include:

  • Heart disease and cardiovascular impairment — This is any condition that impairs the heart or the circulatory system. Problems with veins or arteries such as peripheral vascular disease also fall into this category because they harm other systems in the body by decreasing blood flow. Whether the illness is congenital or acquired later in life, SSD / SSI benefits could be available.
  • Mental health disorders – This category covers a wide range of illnesses related to the mind. Common psychological conditions include depression, bipolar disorder, panic attacks, post-traumatic stress disorder and schizophrenia. In order to qualify for disability benefits, a mental disorder must be severe enough to significantly limit a person’s work performance.
  • Cancer — This condition occurs when there is a malignant growth or tumor, which sometimes spreads to other areas of the body through the bloodstream. There are many different forms of cancer, and many of them can be debilitating.
  • Neurological disorders — These health problems are related to the brain and nervous system. Many different debilitating illnesses and injuries are considered neurological in nature, including multiple sclerosis, seizures, traumatic brain injuries, strokes, neuropathy and spinal disorders. Some neurological disorders cause paralysis.
  • Respiratory problems — If your lungs don’t function properly, it becomes difficult to maintain the stamina necessary to work. Common respiratory disorders include asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pulmonary hypertension, pulmonary edema and obstructive lung diseases.
  • Musculoskeletal disorders — The inability to move your body properly and severe joint pain are classified as musculoskeletal conditions. This can include arthritis and shoulder injuries, as well as back and neck problems and fibromyalgia. Bone fractures and amputations also fit in this category.
  • Loss of vision, hearing and balance — Blindness is often caused by abnormalities in the eye, optic nerve or the brain. An individual with 20/200 vision or worse in both eyes is considered blind and could qualify for disability benefits. When there is no kind of device that can improve a person’s hearing, then the individual is considered deaf. Disorders such as Meniere’s disease affect a person’s balance. Tinnitus and progressive hearing loss can also be symptoms of vertigo issues.
  • Digestive system disorders — Inflammatory bowel disease, hepatitis, Crohn’s disease and colitis are all illnesses that affect the digestive system. Organs such as the gallbladder, liver and pancreas may also be affected by digestive problems.
  • Immune system disorders — This form of illness occurs when the body’s own tissues are vulnerable because of a weakened immune system. HIV / AIDS can be a devastating immune disorder. Rheumatic diseases, collagen vascular disorders and connective tissue disorders are all caused by the immune system’s inability to fight off serious infections.
  • Blood disorders — Abnormalities of white and red blood cells, as well as issues with platelets and clotting all fall under hematological illnesses. Diseases that often arise from various blood problems include chronic anemia and sickle cell disease.
  • Kidney disorders — People who have renal dysfunction are in constant need of dialysis to remove toxins from their blood. Kidney failure is often related to diabetes.

In order to qualify for SSD / SSI or other disability benefits, you must provide documentation that demonstrates how your condition prevents you from working. However, the type of ailment is not the primary factor in determining your right to benefits. The most important aspect of your case is that you can demonstrate your disability is severe enough to prevent you from working for at least 12 months.

The process of obtaining disability benefits is often long, complicated and very frustrating. However, you don’t have to go through it alone. Our experienced lawyers can help you get the Social Security Disability or Supplemental Security Income you need to get on with your life.
