According to the Occupational Health and Safety Administration, 33 workers in South Florida died on the job in 2012, the Sun Sentinel reports. This was eight more than in 2011. Statewide, 227 workers were killed on the job, two more than in the previous year.
The construction industry accounted for the largest number of deaths. Forty-one construction industry workers died in 2012, with 15 related to falls and 12 to incidents involving transport. Thirty-six workers died in the transportation and warehousing industries.
Most worker deaths were the result of falls, being crushed by equipment, or electrocution.
Despite the high number of fatalities in 2012, OSHA made just 74 investigations.
“When we respond to a fatal accident, we investigate what caused the accident, the hazard itself that led to the death,” said Ben Ross, OSHA acting deputy regional administrator, told the newspaper.
According to OSHA, penalties are levied against a company when a hazard isn’t removed or corrected.
