The Tampa Bay metro area is one of the most dangerous in the country for bike riders and walkers. From 2000 to 2009, 905 pedestrians and four bicyclists were killed, making it the second most hazardous place in all of the U.S., the Tampa Tribune reports.

The Public Works Department is planning to make improvements to the most dangerous roads in Hillsborough County, outside the Tampa city limits. The improvements include new bike lanes, medians, refuge islands, sidewalks and more street lights.

Kevin Beckner, Hillsborough County commissioner, has been instrumental in pushing for these steps.

“We know the reputation that our area has as it comes to pedestrian and bicycle accidents,” Beckner said at a recent commission meeting, “and we need to do what’s in our authority and jurisdiction to reduce those accidents and to ensure with greater certainty the safety of our citizens that come here.”

The planned improvements should help matters in the Tampa area. Unfortunately, there will always be accidents involving pedestrians and bike riders. If you were injured in an accident with a careless driver, you could be eligible to receive money damages.
