Social Security workers and representatives staged rallies across the country in early December to protest possible cuts to Social Security by Congress.
According to Isaac Melvin, a Social Security Administration representative, the operating budget for the SSA could be cut by as much as $600 million. The agency is currently under a hiring freeze, which has accounted for a loss of 8,000 jobs since 2011.
Hours at Social Security offices have been reduced and with the SSA encouraging the use of online services, this means that more employees could be out of work.
Melvin stressed the fact that Social Security doesn’t account for any part of the federal deficit. The program is entirely self-financed and neither increases or decreases the federal budget.
Melvin wants people to contact their representatives in Congress to voice their opinions about the proposed cuts.
Regardless of all the political noise surrounding Social Security, the program continues to help millions of Americans. If you are sick or injured and can no longer work, you should consider applying for Social Security Disability. This fund provides benefits to people who are too disabled to work.
Advantages in Using a Lawyer’s Help
To get benefits, you have to fill out a long application and retrieve all the required medical forms and documents. You can do this on your own, but a wise decision would be to seek help from professionals who understand the complexities of the Social Security Disability system.
Most people who apply for benefits are at first turned down. That’s why many people in Florida and elsewhere work with lawyers experienced in handling Social Security Disability benefits cases to make sure their applications, along with everything else involved with their claims, are handled thoroughly and correctly from the beginning.
