The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has created a free online search tool where car owners and buyers can check if their unit has been recalled, CBS DFW reported on Wednesday, August 20.

Under the NHTSA’s recall search tool, owners and buyers can check the status of their vehicle by entering their vehicle identification number (VIN) into the space provided. The VIN can be found on the driver’s door post near the latch, or on top of the dashboard near the windshield. Car manufacturers are also now obligated to provide this information on their website, and are required to update it every week.

The website was launched to lessen the number of vehicles on the road that have been recalled, but remain unrepaired, often times because the owner is unaware of the problem.

Defective cars on the road pose a serious threat to everyone. At times, however, manufactures of defective vehicles fail to conduct measures that would ensure all affected models are recalled and repaired. If you believe the car accident you have been involved in was a result of a defective vehicle, consult with a qualified product liability attorney at the Disparti Law Group, P.A., to learn which steps to take in possibly filing a claim.
