A recent study shows that Orlando is the worst city in the nation when it comes to pedestrians being hit and killed by cars. That is why the Florida Department of Transportation is trying to raise awareness of pedestrian safety by launching its Alert Today, Alive Tomorrow campaign.
The department is encouraging pedestrians to always use crosswalks and look before crossing. It also is reminding motorists to:
- Stop before turning right on red
- Yield to pedestrians
- Pay attention to the road
More than 6,000 pedestrians were killed over the last 12 years in Florida, according to the group Transportation for America. Most fatal accidents occur on roads with a speed limit of 40 mph or greater. A pedestrian who is struck by a vehicle going that fast has only about a 15 percent chance of surviving.
If you were injured due to the carelessness of a driver, you probably have many concerns and questions. Once your injuries are attended to, you should think about talking to a personal injury lawyer to see what your options are.
