If you don’t answer collection calls, things may get worse. While most debt collectors are skilled at pushing your buttons to elicit some kind of payment, by ignoring those collection calls altogether you may be giving the collectors an incentive to keep calling. Instead, answer the call and document who is calling you, their telephone number, what company they work for, the date they called, and what exactly they said. If you owe the debt, but are not in a financial position to make payments, clearly tell the debt collector “I do not have the money to make payments at this time, so please stop calling me.” If you expect that your financial position will remain the same for the next six months, tell the debt collector that and ask him or her to not call you for the next six months. Again, document every single telephone call. If you clearly inform the debt collector of your inability to pay, and they still keep calling you, you may have a claim for debt collector harassment. If this happens, we may be able to help you.
