Thousands of bicyclists rode into Cotanchobee Fort Brooke Park in Tampa on the first weekend in November for the sixth annual Bike Bash. The event, which takes place in a different Florida city each year, promotes cycling and raises awareness of bicyclist safety.
The Bike Bash was sponsored by the South West Florida Bicycle United Dealers. This year, the focus was to push for more bike paths, particularly in urban areas, in order to encourage more people to commute to work.
Tampa is not known for being especially bike-friendly, and many streets don’t have bike lanes. However, said Mayor Bob Buckhorn, who was one of the bike riders at the bash, the city is making progress.
“I want to celebrate biking in our community,” Buckhorn was quoted as saying. “We are making it safer in Tampa, and biking is really taking off.”
Every year numerous bike riders are hurt or killed in collisions with motor vehicles. New bike lanes and greater public awareness may help curtail such accidents. However, even bicyclists riding in their own lanes are not immune from collisions with automobiles.
