An 8-year-old girl whose mother was killed by a drunken driver took part recently in the Tampa Mothers Against Drunk Driving walk. The child has raised $5,000 for MADD, the Brandon Patch reports.

The little girl was riding with her mother on the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway in 2009 when they were hit by a car going the wrong direction. She had to undergo dozens of surgeries, and doctors once thought she might not walk again.

“With everyone’s help, we can and will eliminate drunk driving, a 100 percent preventable crime,” said Amber Saltzman, coordinator of Walk Like MADD.

The walk took place at the University of Southern Florida in Hillsborough County, the deadliest county in Florida for drunk driving accidents in 2011. According to Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, the county had 67 alcohol-related fatalities that year.
